Adventure Gamers' 2008 Readers' Choice Awards Poll
Written by Jack Allin — February 9, 2009

The first annual “Aggie” Awards presentation is almost upon us! You’ve read all about them (or if you haven’t, go do that now) and know our nominees, but now it’s your turn to recognize the best games of 2008. In addition to our official staff selections, we will also be unveiling our “Readers’ Choice” awards, and it’s time to cast your votes.

Below is a complete list of categories open for voting. Only one vote per category is allowed. To make your choice, simply select the appropriate game from the drop-down menu available for each question. If you wish to pass on certain categories, simply pick the "No answer" selection from the menu.

This survey works solely on the honour system, so we haven’t taken any precautions to avoid ballot-stuffing (although your IP address will be logged after submitting a survey). We do ask, however, that you limit yourselves to only one entry. One ballot per person is how voting works best, and we trust that no one will abuse the system. In the same way, we ask that you vote only for games you feel are deserving of their awards. This is all just for fun, but spoiling votes just ruins the fun for everyone. In the unlikely event of suspicious voting activity, we’ll deal with that at the time, but we’re confident that won’t be necessary.

Voting will end on Monday, February 16th, and award winners will be unveiled over the course of three days, from February 18-20th.

Can God of War III save the PS3?

Or is it all about the price cut?

Will the release of God of War III really turn round the fortunes of the PS3? Analyst Nick Williams certainly thinks so, although price will still be a factor.

The launch of God of War III in late 2009/early 2010 will mark a pivotal moment for Sony. But in order to ensure that this game is a hardware sales driver, the cost of the base-level PS3 will need to be in the same ballpark as the Xbox 360 and Wii. According to our latest consumer tracking study, only two in three people who plan to purchase God of War III currently own a PS3

Like most who played them I enjoyed the two previous God of War games but would I be waiting around for the third game before I bought a PS3? Maybe, I guess, but chances are most God of War fans will have either got a PS3 or moved over to 360. That's if they can afford one of course. Williams, like most analysts, states the obvious, although price is clearly still a huge factor in the PS3's slow start.

The price point for the PS3 remains a real problem for Sony. Sony execs now find themselves in the precarious position of trying to balance consumer price expectations with the high costs of producing each PS3. That said, the PS2's continued success more than eight years after launch suggests that Sony is thinking long term with the PS3. If Sony can continue to bring down hardware manufacturing costs, it seems likely that it will offer a price cut by the end of Summer 2009.

CipSoft Staying Strong Against Cheaters

from Casual Gamer Chick

CipSoft had announced the banning of 5,000 user accounts because they were cheating by using automated software. One would think that banning 5,000 users for cheating would serve as a warning to other people that were thinking about cheating or maybe weren’t caught cheating, but it didn’t. CipSoft just announced they banned another 5,163 accounts for using unofficial software. cipsoft

Nobody likes cheaters and they become annoying to the every day players who are playing the game for enjoyment. CipSoft has developed tools that are really accurate at finding the cheaters. The tools will let Cipsoft know who is cheating, when they are cheating and how they are cheating,

CipSoft relies on a home made tool in order to identify the users of unofficial software automatically. “We are 100% confident about the accuracy of our tool.” says Matthias Rudy, Lead Programmer at CipSoft. “We now know exactly who is cheating, how they are cheating and when they are cheating.” Rudy reveals.

Hopefully CipSoft can find and punish all of the cheaters that are making the game less enjoyable for the non-cheating players. It is a shame that there are people out there that always want to game the system. Why bother playing the game if you want to cheat? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Press Release Follows:

Regensburg, March 4, 2009 — CipSoft continues its effort to eliminate all cheaters from Tibia. After a first wave at the beginning of February, CipSoft now banned another 5163 accounts for the use of unofficial software.

“Cheating is a nuisance for any multiplayer online game.” says Florian Eckert, responsible Product Manager at CipSoft. “For Tibia it is exceptionally annoying as its community has grown for over 12 years and during that time established a well balanced equilibrium.” Eckert continues. “We cannot and we will not tolerate any unfair interference to this.”

The use of unofficial software - generally referred to as ‘cheating’ - gives players an unfair advantage over others by automating tricky tasks or even controlling the whole character in game. Identifying players who use such programs can be a hard task as the used software is designed to imitate natural behaviour.

Once identified, cheaters have to face severe consequences. Depending on their ‘criminal record’ some of the cheaters are only excluded from the game for a certain period of time. The accounts of other more intractable cheaters will be deleted completely.

When asked about CipSoft’s future plans and policy concerning cheating, Eckert admits “We’ve already pulled the trigger once, now we’ve pulled it a second time. It seems like we start to get the hang on it.”

Tibia is one of the oldest MMORPGs worldwide. It is online since 1997 and currently has a subscriber base of 120,000 players.

Darkstalkers Tribute Fan Entries DONE!

March 2nd, 2009

We just woke up and sorted the last batch of entries from last night and you guys did not disappoint. After deleting multiple entries that were the exact same, here’s the grand total…

(drumroll please)

………

2072 submissions!

2072, and over half of those arrived in the last two days. You guys may be very last minute oriented but you’re also unbelievably passionate about Darkstalkers!

We are awed by the number of submissions. We thought last year’s 1400+ Street Fighter submissions was impressive, but this is just bonkers. The variety and quality we’re seeing overall is fantastic. Really, really great stuff. This Tribute book will be one for the ages.

Needless to say, this is going to take a bit of time to get fully organized and judging may take a bit while we go through this mass of material.

Some quick points:

- Yes, we did get your submission, seriously. Even if the website gave you an error, it almost certainly went through. When the web form was being pummeled it would sometimes spit out errors but, every time we checked, the submission did go through correctly.

- We don’t know how long before we can announce winners. Organizing these, judging them, fighting amongst ourselves over which pieces should get in and then finalizing the list will take some time, especially when that’s added to our regular work schedule.

- We don’t know how many fan submitted pieces will be in the final book yet. We’re still finalizing page count (we originally assumed Darkstalkers Tribute would be thinner than Street Fighter… now, maybe not :)) and receiving art from invited professionals.

- We’re looking at a variety of things when deciding which ones will make the final cut to be in the book but basically it’s quality & originality. With this many submissions, it’s going to be unbelievably difficult getting down to our final list and it’ll break our heart to cut some of them out. All we can say is that we’ll do our best to represent the fans well.

- Unfortunately, we can’t give an extension for fan submissions. We announced the contest on January 8th here on the blog so there was plenty of time to put together a piece. It would be unfair to extend the deadline for some fan submissions and not everyone. And with all the ones we already have, we know we’re in good shape.

- Many artists put together multiple unique high quality entries, which shows great commitment to the contest. Thank you for your intense efforts, whether or not you win a spot in the book. Your enthusiasm for these properties helps inspire us and reminds us why we do these books and comics in the first place. THANK YOU!

PS: 2072! So crazy!

On Game Journalism and Award

SRB-doors-web.jpg

Intent Media plans to launch The Games Media Awards 2007 which they say will take place in London in October.

The awards, which will take place at the Soho Revue bar, will include more than 250 people and multiple awards for those who cover the gaming industry.

"Diversity of coverage is key to the games industry's connection with consumers, but many within the wider media do not feel appreciated. Some have told us they don't think they have a genuine enough relationship with the companies and products that they are writing about," commented Intent Media boss Stuart Dinsey.

"The Games Media Awards will look to change that. They will build stronger ties between the games industry and media at all levels."

While I applaud the idea, I think the reasoning is deeply flawed. The last thing game journalism needs is a closer relationship with the industry. It's already far, far too cozy.

Besides, there's already plenty of journalism awards out there. I think if game journalism wants to get serious it needs to do so on the same field the rest of journalists play on.

We shouldn't be coming up with our own awards, we should be striving to win awards that already exist. Awards by the Society of Professional Journalism, the Investigative Reporters and Editors, Computer Assisted Reporters and state run journalism groups.

I think we all know that just because we write about games doesn't mean it can't inspire serious, important stories. Now lets prove it.

This Week in PlayStation Home: Street Fighter IV Live Q&A, Resident Evil 5 Space Launching

Posted by Locust_Star // PlayStation Home Online Community Specialist

What’s up Home-boys and Home-girls?

We have some über-cool events scheduled for this week that we want to hip you all to. First, we are holding a live Q&A session with John Diamonon and Seth Killian from Capcom today, March 4th. This chat will focus on all things related to Street Fighter IV and will give a few lucky attendees the chance to win a more intimate follow-up Q&A (complete with an SFIV tips and tricks tutorial) in a private clubhouse at a later date.

HOME Street Fighter

To participate in the general Q&A, just bring your bad self over to the Gamer’s Lounge today between the hours of 7:00 – 9:00pm PST (10:00 – 11:00pm EST) – and don’t be afraid to show up dressed as your favorite SFIV character! To start, John and Seth will be tackling the most popular questions culled from the official PlayStation Home forums (under the usernames “HIERO9D3” and “clothhand”), but will hold a brief open chat afterwards. These two gents will be “instance-jumping” throughout the event, so if you’re in the Gamer’s Lounge and you don’t see them, cool out and sit tight! They’ll be making the rounds.

To qualify for the private chat, make sure you attend the general Q&A decked out in the Dan Saikyo shirt (unlockable in Home). Attendees sporting this hot reward will be entered into a drawing and then chosen at random to participate. If you make the list, we’ll send you details via private message in your XrossMediaBar regarding the time and date of the follow-up session.

In other news: We’re launching the Resident Evil 5 game space tomorrow, March 5th. So dress yourself up in that free Resident Evil gear available in the Mall, check out the new space, and learn more about the game before it launches later this month. We’ll be looking out for you!

10 most anticipated games in 2008

Now, with 2007 pretty well covered, it’s time to turn our gaze to all the great, big budget titles we have to look forward to. So, with an eye to the future, here are the 10 most anticipated games of 2008:

10. Wii Fit (Wii)
wii.jpg
This isn’t really a game, which is why it ranks so low on my list, but Wii Fit is definitely an anticipated title. It brings one of the most different peripherals ever seen — the Wii Balance Board — and promises to be the best way to make a workout fun since the debut of Wii Sports in November of last year.

9. Soul Calibur IV (PS3, Xbox 360)

2.jpg

Not necessarily a revolution of the genre like II was, but this incarnation of Soul Calibur is the first next-gen and the screen grabs that Namco Bandai are releasing look incredible. Never have the characters’ clothes looked more realistic, and if they’ve taken a cue from the audience reaction to Soul Calibur III, this could be a return to form for the series. Definitely a must play for me.
8. Mario Kart (Wii)

3.jpg

Mario Kart is a series that has always delivered quality with the notable exception of Double Dash. Going back to the single rider formula that was incredibly successful in Super Mario Kart, Super Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario Kart for the DS, this looks to be a great multiplayer experience. As of now, Nintendo is still calling this a 16-player online multiplayer endeavor, and the inclusion of motorcycles could make or break the game. This could be the best Mario Kart yet, or it could just be another gimmick.

7. GTA IV (PS3, Xbox 360)

4.jpg The Grand Theft Auto series, like Mario Kart and Soul Calibur, hasn’t seen a ton of change over the years, but it’s the way this game looks that could be the difference. Like the other two, this is the first next-gen game for the series and this could be the prettiest we’ve ever seen Liberty City look. Expect controversy around this game, and a fun experience, if not a predictable one.

6. Burnout Paradise (PS3, Xbox 360)

5.jpgThe graphics I’ve seen from Burnout Paradise have been amazing. This is a series that has produced one fun game after another, and has had the ability to make it feel fresh and new each time. If there was one game on this list that I could endorse as a ‘must buy’, this would have to be it. Burnout Revenge was and is one of my most played games and this one shouldn’t be any different. What other racing game rewards vehicular malfeasance with turbo?

5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

6.jpgThere has been more press on this game than almost any other, as Nintendo has shifted the hype train into full speed for Brawl’s 2008 appearance. Originally this was scheduled to be released much earlier — like this Christmas — but was delayed until 2008 to give it that extra polish. But don’t worry about this one, I can only expect it to be as addictive and fun a party fighter as the last two were. The inclusion of Pit from Kid Icarus, Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog can’t hurt either.

4. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, NDS, N-Gage)

7.jpg This is a biggie for me, as a huge fan of the Dark Forces series, since Lucasarts has touted this as the biggest and most fantastic Jedi game yet. It’s taking the force powers to a whole new level, and from the little I’ve seen of the game, it looks ‘impressive, most impressive.’ Sorry, geek moment there. You get to play as Anakin Skywalker’s — see Darth Vader — padewan that no one knew about. But seriously, in the trailer, the protagonist is pulling a Star Destroyer out of the sky and crashing it into the earth in front of him. Yeah. It should be very cool. *I previously reported that this was concept art but got an e-mail correction from Lucasarts that this is indeed a screenshot! Still, don’t forget to check out the official Force Unleashed trailer for a bigger taste.

3. Fallout 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

8.jpgFallout 3 makes the list purely because it looks like Bethesda has this one cooking as a pet project. All I can say is that from reading their development blogs and seeing screenshots of the ongoing project, this looks like a game that has been made from the ground up for the real fans of the Fallout series. While it is a departure from the three-quarter perspective, turn-based adventure that was the first two games, released 10 years ago, it looks like this game will stay completely faithful to the post-apocalyptic environment and quirky dialog that made the series so great. The contest they held for fans to be able to create a perk for the game just shows how much they care about the community created with the first two games.

2. Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360)

9.jpg While it is another next-gen incarnation of a beloved series, Resident Evil 5 looks to make a step in a different direction in both gameplay and graphics. The trailer to this game alone scares me, so I have no idea how I’ll be able to play it. Probably lights on, with a few friends present, but it’s the new gameplay elements that could make this an instant classic like its forbear, Resident Evil 4. It’s set in the desert, so if you stay outside in the sunshine for too long, you’ll take damage from the extreme temperature. But if you go inside, you face zombies, in the dark, at close quarters. Should be a challenge and a great game to play.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)

10.jpgOut of all the games on this list, I feel like I know the most about this one which makes it an easier choice for number one. Everything I’ve seen — and I do mean everything — has looked incredible. Not only does it look like a next-gen game should look, but the way Konami has enhanced the controls for Solid Snake is ridiculous. It’s not that the first three games handled poorly, but Snake is seeing an enhanced sneak suit, complete camouflage, targeted attacks, a robot drone scout…I mean the list goes on and on. The trailers look infinitely cool and it’s probably the only game on this list where you play as an old man, which doesn’t seem cool until you see just how well it plays. I watched the E3 coverage of this, along with the breakdown of the new controls, and it looks like they’ve taken this series and the entire espionage genre to a new level. This is also one of the few PS3 console exclusives, but the real question is, how long will it stay that way?

unreal engine 3

With development costs soaring, game creators are turning more and more to middleware engines, software that takes care of much of the underlying gameplay mechanics and allows them to focus on game design. One of the most popular in recent years is Unreal Engine 3, a tool that’s been showcased in developer Epic’s own games, such as Gears Of War.

Unreal Engine 3 is mainly a tool for high-end systems, including the PC and the new consoles, and there are versions of the software tool that run on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. But what about the Wii?

Earlier in the year, Epic’s Mark Rein told Kikizo that there were rumblings of a studio - not Epic - bringing Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. Speaking with us again in this new interview published today, Rein confirmed that an unnamed development team has taken up the challenge.

“I know one of our licensee who’s giving it a shot,” Rein said. “It’s their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii.”

Ubisoft had used Epic’s previous tool, Unreal Engine 2, in its Wii launch game Red Steel.
Mark Rein, VP at Epic Games
“There’s so many things we can do and are already doing, to improve our engine, on the platforms we’re aiming it at, that going back and working on that [for Wii] just doesn’t make sense,” Rein added.

He said that Unreal Engine 3 is “a better engine today than it was a year ago”, when Gears Of War arrived for the Xbox 360.

“The engine is getting optimised and we’re improving it all the time.”

To see how the engine looks today, look no further than Unreal Tournament 3, Epic’s new shooter in stores this week. For more on the game, check out our full interview with Mark Rein.
